There’s something magical about watching an artist at work. In “Live Art,” a video series from The New York Times on Facebook, viewers get to peek over the shoulders of contemporary children’s book illustrators as they draw and discuss their work and processes. You can find all of the videos here on Facebook and a roundup of several of them in this article. ... Ms. Blackall showed the images she referenced to paint water for the book “A Voyage in the Clouds.” Related VideoCredit...The New York Times · Several “Live Art” videos feature segments where the artists describe how they use reference images and historical research to inform their work. The artists featured in “Live Art” often shared their sketchbooks or early drafts of their work, and discussed how their ideas evolved as they more clearly understood what they wanted to achieve or convey with each image.Since the artists featured in “Live Art” illustrate books, it’s probably no surprise that they believe artwork can tell a story much the same way words can.

Enjoy exclusive events with live discussions from today’s top artists! Remember as you go through the day how important art is. Art is what makes us human beings special. The need to make things is what gives us goals. This quote appeared not too long ago, and it was one that really made me think: “Art begs you to notice it. Why? Because art is God’s way of saying hello. So pay attention to poetry. Pay attention to music. Pay attention to paintings and sculptures and photo exhibits and ballets and plays.Isn’t that a good one? Read it again! Read it everyday! It’s a great reminder of how important art is to this life! I admit, there are times I question why I keep producing drawing after drawing, painting after painting. I don’t exhibit or sell things in galleries.I do most of my work for two reasons. One being that I use them as as examples on various techniques for my students. The second reason is because I love it! I’m an artist, and there seems to be no reason better than that. It’s who I am.

What is Live Art? | Joshua Sofaer

At its most fundamental, Live Art is when an artist chooses to make work directly in front of the audience in space and time. Performance: 28 August 2002, Oxford Street, London Exhibition: 27-30 March 2003, Tate Modern, London Broadcast: 18 September 2004, Channel 4 Television 29 June-22 July 2006, Points d'impact, Piano Nobile, Geneva 4-6 October 2007, Granary, Cork 4 October-18 December 2007, The Grey Room, Teater Giljotin, Stockholm 20-30 November, 2007, Videofronteras, La Casa Encendida, Madrid 24-26 January, 2008, Excursions Festival, Limerick City Art Gallery · A five minute video infotainment. What is live art?So instead of making an object, or an environment (a painting for example) and leaving it for the audience to encounter in their own time, Live Art comes into being at the actual moment of encounter between artist and spectator.Or at least even if they are not physically present, the artist sets up a situation in which the audience experience the work in a particular space and time, and the notion of ‘presence’ is key to the concerns of the work. The term ‘Live Art’ came into usage in the UK in the mid-1980’s, and was born out of a frustration by arts professionals to account for art practices that expanded or escaped the classifications in use.For some, this has been a reaction to the commercial art-market, where objects become discrete commodities which are bought as investments, accrue value, and are sold on. They choose to reject this commodity fetishism by creating work which vanishes once it has been made, that deals with the here and now, and that can rarely be hung on a gallery wall. A Live Artist may find their concerns rotate around issues of form, experimenting with the possibilities of a performance or an event.

Live Art - Wikipedia

Live Art is the fifth album released by Béla Fleck and the Flecktones and their first non-studio album. It was recorded live at various concerts between 1992 and 1996 and features ten guest musicians. Featured guests include Sam Bush, Branford Marsalis, Chick Corea, and Bruce Hornsby. Bryson Alden, writing for No Depression, wrote "Their music combines the familiar sounds of bluegrass with whatever else comes along, be it jazz, classical, rap or “The Ballad of Jed Clampett”. In lesser hands, these combinations would almost certainly be disastrous, but thanks to the superlative talent of Bela on banjo and assorted banjoesque electronic devices, along with his sidemen, each with a unique instrument/approach, the result is wonderfully pleasing... This two-CD set, recorded live over a period of five years, provides an excellent benchmark of their work."

On Sept. 6, Bryan-based art exhibition, Degallery, celebrated the start of the month with First Saturday: an event with art, live jazz, food and community. Sophia Munoz, Life & Arts Writer • September 10, 2025 · Fresh, local and lively: Midtown Park Farmers’ MarketOn a quiet Saturday morning, the Bryan-College Station area buzzed with excitement for the activities ahead. Some tucked white towels in their boots while others flocked to local businesses on Wellborn Road. However, on the other side of town, local artists set up booths to share their passions with all who come to enjoy.Smith and his wife shared a booth displaying both of their acrylic painting creations depicting nature and wildlife. As a beginner, Smith was hesitant to call himself an artist, but like many art vendors at the event, he was encouraged by the gallery’s owner, Dary Dega.Dega started the First Saturday tradition in 2020 to provide a space for artists to sell and promote their work after initially being turned down by the coordinators of First Friday. Since then, First Saturday has started at 11 a.m.
